Dr. Bijesh Raj Ghimire, Co-founder and Medical Director of Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center (NCHRC), stands at the forefront of this transformation.
With over a decade of experience in medical oncology, Dr. Ghimire is not only a clinician of international repute but also a healthcare leader deeply committed to building systems that heal, educate, and empower.
From Aspiration to Action
Dr. Ghimire’s journey began with a medical degree (MBBS) from Bharati Vidyapeeth University, India, followed by an MD in Medical Oncology from Sun Yat-Sen University, China. His pursuit of excellence led him to fellowships at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center (RGCIRC), New Delhi and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Bethesda, USA—two of the most prestigious cancer institutions globally.
His return to Nepal marked the beginning of something far greater than a personal career. With a vision to make comprehensive cancer care accessible within the country, Dr. Ghimire co-founded NCHRC, a state-of-the-art facility that today serves thousands of patients annually with cutting-edge technology and a compassionate, multidisciplinary approach.
A Global Voice for Cancer Patients
Dr. Ghimire’s contributions are not confined to the hospital walls. In 2009, he was honored with the International Development and Education Award (IDEA) by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Orlando. Two years later, he received the IDEA in Palliative Care (IDEA-PC) award in Chicago.
In 2011, the American Cancer Society recognized him as a Global Cancer Ambassador, where he represented Nepal at the UN High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)—a global platform addressing cancer and other chronic diseases.
Leadership with Purpose
As Medical Director of NCHRC, Dr. Ghimire has played a pivotal role in developing evidence-based protocols, fostering a strong team culture, and leading innovative programs in cancer research, pharmacovigilance, and clinical ethics.
He is a Vice President of the Nepal Cancer Support Group (NCSG) and an Executive Council Member of the Asian Clinical Oncology Society (ACOS). He also holds active memberships in ASCO, ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology), and the SAARC Federation of Oncology – Nepal Chapter.
Research, Recognition & Responsibility
An avid researcher, Dr. Ghimire has authored multiple publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with a focus on nasopharyngeal carcinoma, breast cancer, palliative care, and oncology system development in low-resource settings. His presentations at major conferences, including ASCO and UAE Cancer Congress, continue to place Nepal’s oncology advancement on the global academic map.
